Starvation

Bees can starve without having enough honey stored during winter or long rainy periods in the spring. New hives which are just getting established are also at risk of starvation, as they have not yet had an opportunity to make honey.

Another way bees can starve, even with honey in the hive, is when a few frames with honey are not close to the cluster of bees. As during cold weather, bees may be so tightly clustered that they are unable to move though the hive to search for honey in the remaining comb.
